Recap: Hairstyles Issa Rae Wore on HBO Insecure Hella LA

It’s no secret that Issa Rae is our modern muse for fashion-forward natural hairstyles. We thought we’d do a recap of our favorite hairstyles worn by Issa on HBO’s Insecure each week, which are created by Issa’s longtime stylist Felicia Leatherwood. While Issa has become known for changing up her look several times throughout each episode, last night’s episode Hella LA took a page from the Lena Dunham Girls motif and focused on one extended, arguably dream-like scene for the majority of the episode—the ladies’ adventures at the so-called Kiss and Grind day party.

Tribal Faux Mohawk worn by Issa Rae Insecure Hella LA

Issa’s hairstyle for the episode could be described as a  “tribal twisted faux hawk,” says Colour stylist Ariel Benton. The curly look appears to start with individual twists, that were then twisted out to create a defined curl pattern. The faux hawk is styled with hair falling to mainly one side, and sides are then pinned back. Four small, alternating braids and flat twist details along the sides add texture and elevate the look to a more dressy updo.

To recreate the look, you can slick back your sides using an edge control like Loc N, which works well for both soft and coarse textures, says Colour stylist Ariel. For softer hair textures, or for a more deconstructed look, we love a pomade such as KeraCare Styling Wax.

An Open Letter to Black Women about the Dangers of Hair Weave

An Open Letter to Black Women about the Dangers of Hair Weave

August is National Hair Loss Awareness month. For the past ten years, experts in the field have used the time to focus on ways to prevent and treat hair loss. The following essay is by Debra Shigley, founder of the Colour app — a hair styling service for women of color. Shigley, an author and former attorney before venturing into the beauty business, says we are long overdue for a candid conversation about the hair loss epidemic among women of color and one of its main causes — hair weaves. A Message For Our Daughters

What is beauty?

Last weekend we participated in The Curvy Fashionista Style Expo, brainchild of fab Atlanta blogger Marie Denee. We were inspired by two days of super-powered body positivity, and joined in on the fun with an impromptu, interactive display on What is Beauty. Guests decorated messages with advice they’d share with their future daughters (or younger selves) on what real beauty is. We got all the feels reading ladies’ candid responses, like “You are more than enough!” and “I feel most beautiful when I embrace my flaws.”

With Back to School in full effect in Atlanta, it’s a great time to reflect on the beauty positive lessons we teach ourselves, and our children.  I’m reminded of an amazing quote my daughter’s preschool class last year shared:

Our Promise to You

We promise you every day that your child will learn something.

Some days they will bring it home in their hands.

Some days they will bring it home in their heads,

and some days they will bring it home in their hearts.

- V. Welk

Have a great week!

Xo , Debra

The Lifestyle Change Everyone Is Making

Why we are interested, and why you might be, too.

Recently there has been a lot of buzz around "What The Health", a Netflix documentary that  explores healthy living, the food industry, and the benefits of a vegan lifestyle. While watching the film, we learned about the links between foods such as processed meat and dairy, and an increased risk of developing heart disease, some types of cancer, and diabetes. It even got some of the Colour team interested in going vegan!  Here’s some of what we’ve learned so far.

Main Rules of a Vegan Diet

1. No Animal Meat

2. No Animal Products (I.e Cheese, Milk, Eggs, Etc).

Benefits of Being Vegan

Reduced Risks of Chronic Diseases

By eliminating foods such as processed meats and unhealthy sugars from your diet, you are actively decreasing your chances of cancer, diabetes, heart diseases, high blood pressure and more.

It's Environmentally Friendly

Raising animals for food produces more greenhouse gas emissions than every form of transportation combined. Switching to a vegan diet helps save 50% more carbon emissions than driving a Prius.

Healthier Skin and Healthier Hair

A vegan diet forces us to increase our fruit and vegetable intake, so many people see an immense improvement in their skin and hair. Going vegan may  help you reach your full potential when it comes to hair growth and glowing skin.

More Energy

Another positive result many people see from going vegan is an increase in energy. We don't know about you ladies but we will take more energy wherever we can find it!

Going to give this a try? Or are you already a practicing vegan? If you have any tips, stories or recipes you would like to share, we would love to hear! Email us at Hello@getcolour.io

Want Long Hair?

5 Not So Obvious Tips to Longer and Healthier Hair.

This week Colour has collected some key tricks that are often overlooked in the quest to maintain longer and healthier hair. Here are simple (and free!) but effective tricks you can implement into your daily routine.

1. Stay Hydrated
It's a well known fact that water plays a significant part on the journey to clear skin but people often forget that it's also an important contributing factor to healthy hair. Getting your proper daily water intake ensures that you're helping flush out toxins and helps the body function properly.

2. Get Adequate Sleep
The adult body needs about 7-9 hours of sleep a night and if you're getting less than that, you are cheating yourself of essential rest you need for your body to function correctly. The appropriate amount of sleep will give your body proper time to repair itself, detox, and release growth hormones.

3. Switch Your Ponytail and Part Placement
If you constantly wear your ponytails in the same position or have your hair parted on the same side every day, you may want to consider switching it up. Change the side that you part your hair on or go from a high ponytail to a low. When you consistently style your hair the same way, you are continuously applying tension to the same strands and weakening them, subsequently causing breakage.

4. Always Finish Washing or Conditioning Your Hair With A Cold Rinse
Make sure to do a cold-water rinse at the end of each shampoo or condition. Cold water lays down the outer layer of hair more smoothly, which helps prevent moisture loss, snags and heat damage. Rinsing with cold water also helps to seal the cuticle and strengthen your hair before styling it.

5. Avoid Harshly Rubbing Your Hair Dry With A Towel
Vigorously drying your hair with a towel is destructive to your hair’s cuticles and the outer layer of each strand of hair. The coarse texture and dryness of a cotton or terry cloth towel can cause damage. Instead of a towel, try drying your hair with a t-shirt, patting hair to soak up moisture.

The "Do Everything" Hairstyle

4 hairstyles you can wear from day to night this summer.

Summer is in full effect, which means longer days, full of activities with friends and family. With busy schedules this summer, the last thing that you want to worry about is changing your hair to appropriately match each activity. We’ve compiled the top four summer hairstyles that can seamlessly go from daytime to evening looks. These hairstyles are low maintenance, minimal manipulation, and protective.

1. An Up-do With A Few Fun Braids
This summer ladies are wearing braids of all types but we understand that everyone doesn’t always have the time to get their entire head braided. A great solution to that is a simple up-do accompanied by a few braids. This style takes minimal time but can completely change your look, the braids automatically make any up-do stylish and adds some glam.

2. Flat Twists
We have been long time fans of flat-twists so we are happy that they are finally getting the credit they deserve! This simple but stylish look can last several days. Flat twists are a great alternative to braids but offer the same protective benefits. They can be worn as an up-do, halo style or twisted into a pulled back bun.

3. Pulled Back Deep Side Part
This look may be the quickest of them all, a deep side part with your hair pulled back into a ponytail or bun. This is a classic style that can take you from brunch with friends to a late night out on the town. Just tame flyaways with a control hold hair spray throughout the day and you're good to go.

4. Cornrows
Cornrows are a classic look that remains popular every summer. This is a great protective style and can last weeks when maintained correctly. It is key to make sure to speak up to your stylist if you feel that your braids are too tight because the tension on your edges can cause breakage. A great way to spice up your look from daytime to evening is by adding gold ornaments or wrapping your braids into a bun.
Colour stylists have the ability to provide our customers with any of the above styles. Book an in-home appointment or stop by our pop-up shop to give a new summer look a try.
