In this week's Colour Chat, we spoke with Dr. Chynna Steele, a top dermatologist based in Alpharetta, Georgia. The Harvard University graduate has contributed her expert medical opinion to Best Self, WebMD, Ebony, CBS Atlanta, and recently appeared on the talk show, Sister Circle. Chynna chatted with us about her relationship with her hair, working in the medical field, and more.
How does your hair help tell the story of who you are?
I like my hair to be feminine and full of volume generally. I think that's a reflection of my personality. I change it up with color and styling when I'm on vacation or for events. I am ok with it being a little "wilder" or sportier when I'm not in the office.
Why do you choose Colour for your hair services?
Colour is convenient for me. The biggest thing is time. Lots of times, I have a tight schedule with work and events, so having someone come to me makes sense.
If you could give other women one piece of advice, what would it be?
To not be defined by anyone or anything. To do things that make you happy and that you want to do—even if it's not necessarily what people in your profession, age group, gender, etc. typically do. Accept yourself for who you are.
What inspired you to enter into the medical field? What is the most rewarding part of your career as a dermatologist?
I always liked science and working with people. I love being a dermatologist because there's so much variety in what I do.
I see lots of different people and get a little glimpse into their lives—that's the human part of it. I get to help them look and feel better and be healthier in a way that they can actually see because what I do is superficial (literally!).
I treat everything from skin cancer to wrinkles and tired eyes, so it's always interesting.
