We Wish We Had Better News

This week we flew to Philly to participate in the National Black MBA Association pitch competition.

It was an exciting opportunity— we were among 11 national semi finalists competing for a prize of $50,000. Stephanie did amazing as our designated “pitcher” for the event. But, there was some strong competition and in the end, we didn't advance to the finals nor win a prize. Shoutout to the 1st place winner Atima Lui, of nude matching software, Nudest. She rocked the house!

I'm not gonna lie, it was a bummer. That grant money would have come in handy— to help with operations, pay for new features, start an android app, and continue to get the word out in Atlanta. In case you guys are wondering, our business is “bootstrapped” meaning we haven't raised money like the vast majority of tech startups do. We are trying, but so far it's been a lot of rejection and we're not totally sure why. Is our service good enough? How can we improve? How can we tell our story more persuasively? (If you have any ideas, by all means just send me a note!). On a daily basis, our number one priority is serving our members and our stylists—trying to go above and beyond to deliver an experience that changes lives. Deep down, I know we are succeeding. The positive feedback from incredible women like you in our community helps give us the confidence and boost of energy to keep pushing. I'm constantly reminding myself, if changing black hair forever were easy, someone probably would have done it already! We're on the right track . . . the ups and downs are part of the learning process.

So, after the loss on Thursday, we pouted for a few hours, toasted our accomplishments over some cocktails andParmesan French fries. Then, it was back to the business of filling appointments, building our latest feature in the app, and strategizing our next move. Thank you so much for sharing this journey with us.

p.s. Keep supporting black businesses! We're all stronger together :-)

xo, Debra
